Fuel Check: Taurine, By The Numbers

First in a series. Once in a while we pull the actual numbers on something people assume they already know about their coffee. First one: taurine — yes, it's in Red Bull too.

The part everyone already knows

Taurine is in energy drinks. Most people who've read a Red Bull can already know that much, and it's usually where the conversation stops — "energy drink ingredient" gets filed away as a category, not a number.

It's also in Power Coffee. Here's what the "in Red Bull too" reaction usually skips.

The part that's actually different: the dose

Power Coffee Red Bull Black Coffee
Caffeine 175mg 80mg ~95mg
Taurine 2.1g 1g 0mg
Sugar 0g 27g 0g

2.1g of taurine is a little over double what's in a standard 8.4oz Red Bull can. Not a proprietary claim — this is each product's own published nutrition label, sitting next to ours.

The part that's actually the point: what it's doing

Taurine gets filed under "stimulant" because of where people encounter it, not because of what it does. The research says otherwise. Taurine functions as a neuromodulator — it supports the nervous system's inhibitory response, the mechanism that keeps stimulation from running past where it's useful. It isn't what gives coffee its lift. It's closer to what keeps the lift from turning into a jittery spike.

That's the piece "it's just caffeine and sugar" misses about a can of Red Bull, and it's the piece we formulated for on purpose: 175mg of natural caffeine (comfortably under the European Food Safety Authority's 200mg single-dose safety threshold) paired with 2.1g of taurine, in a formula built around a scoop of coffee, not a can of soda — zero sugar, not 27g of it.

The receipt

Every number above is on the Illuminate Labs certified panel, reviewed against published research: the caffeine dose against EFSA's safety threshold, the taurine dose against the endurance-research range of 1–6g per serving (Ripps & Shen, Molecular Vision, 2012; PubMed 29546641). Red Bull and black coffee's numbers are each product's own label — not ours to adjust.

We're not saying taurine is bad in Red Bull, or that Red Bull is lying about anything on its own can. We're saying the "it's basically the same as an energy drink" reaction doesn't hold up once the actual doses and the actual mechanism are next to each other — and that's worth twenty seconds to check rather than assume.
